A unique cabin on the Pembrokeshire Coast – Y Berllan Hideaway

Y Berllan Hideaway is a truly special place to stay – a unique cabin on the Pembrokeshire Coast. Hidden in the trees and a short stroll to the beach in the tiny coastal village of Cwm-yr-Eglwys, near Newport.

This unique cabin has everything you need for a few days away in Pembrokeshire, including no wifi (or phone reception), which lets be honest, is what we all need! Time away from our phones and the digital world to truly escape into the gorgeous Welsh coastal countryside.

We used Y Berllan Hideaway (still don’t know how to pronounce it!) as our base for hiking the northern part of Pembrokeshire National Park. It is perfectly placed for the coastal path and a short drive to some of the best towns in Pembrokeshire, including Newport, Fishguard and St David’s, the UK’s smallest city.

The cabin itself reminded me of my dad’s old log cabin he built at Hill Holt Wood, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings alongside cute cabin style interiors and comfy beds. We had three days at Y Berllan, but I could have easily spent the week there and used it as both a hiking retreat and writing retreat.

I was gifted a stay at Y Berllan by the team at Unique Hideaways in exchange for a review. As always all opinions are true and honest of how I experienced the accommodation.

In 2023 I walked across every National Park in England, raising over £20,000 for charity. Since then I have been determined to tick off the Welsh and Scottish National Parks too. Last year I walked across Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) and this year it was time to walk across Pembrokeshire National Park.

It is almost all coastal, though wanting to hike up the park’s highest peak we did go inland one day. We spent the first half of the week in the north and the second half hiking the southern half. Y Berllan was the perfect escape after a hard day of hiking.

What ‘Y Berllan Hideaway’ is really like in Pembrokeshire National Park

The Y Berllan Hideaway is set in the middle of a small wooded area, a short walk from the sea. The route to the cabin includes walking along a narrow wooded path before opening up to the cabin’s secluded garden. It feels like a magical walk to what is a magical cabin.

With a veranda that sits around two sides of the cabin there is plenty of space to sit and listen to the multitude of birds singing in the trees, whilst you sip a tea or G&T on one of the wooden arm chairs.

Inside the cabin there is a large open plan kitchen, living, dining area with ample space for sitting by the fire, watching TV or cosying up with a good book or board game. The kitchen is fully equipped with fridge, oven, hob, kettle and all the pots, pans and utensils you might need.

There are three bedrooms, a double room and two single rooms, perfect for a small family or group of friends. The bathroom has a powerful shower and a bath(!) which was exactly what I needed to rest my weary limbs after a day of hiking. There is also a washing machine, which proved handy for washing stinky hiking socks too!

Outside the garden is surrounded by trees and feels very secluded, with a picnic bench, bbq and fire pit. We were too tired to light the fire pit, but if we had been there for relaxing more than hiking I would have definitely been spending my evenings sat by the fire pit, grilling some dinner on the bbq.

The cabin felt truly secluded and I loved that you were in the woods, whilst still being only a couple of minute’s walk from the beach. Outside you could hear the seagulls and sometimes the waves rolling in the distance.

Places to go and things to do near Y Berllan Hideaway

The village is down a narrow road with little more than a few houses, caravans and an occasional ice cream van. The beach is a perfect spot for sea swimming and sunbathing, away from the crowds of some of the other Pembrokeshire beaches. It doesn’t take long to drive to some of Pembrokeshire’s most popular spots. Here are a few places to visit and things to do nearby.

  1. Hike the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path – you are moments from the coastal path, so start from the cabin and go north towards Newport or south towards Fishguard for some beautiful coastal hiking and epic sea views
  2. Drive to the UK’s smallest city – St David’s is less than an hour’s drive and well worth a visit. With a gorgeous visitor centre and lots of unique craft shops and cafes it a great city (imagine small town/large village vibes) to spend a few hours mooching.
  3. Try Coasteering in South Pembrokeshire – If you’re feeling more adventurous then give coasteering a go, perhaps one for the summer months?!
  4. Enjoy a road trip – visit some of Pembrokeshire’s best beaches and sites, this downloadable guide shares great places to visit by car across Pembrokeshire National Park.
  5. Try surfing with a surfing lesson – a bit more of a drive from the cabin, but Wales is known to have some of the best waves in the UK for surfing.

Have I tempted you to visit this unique cabin on the Pembrokeshire coast and have a beautiful digital retreat at Y Berllan? If not then tell me what more I need to do, because this place is beautiful and worth every penny. You can book a stay at Y Berllan on the Unique Hideaways website.
