Old Dungeon Ghyll – Ambleside

For those looking for a last minute hotel that is tranquil and in isolation then the Old Dungeon Ghyll ticks all these boxes.

Guests also get the perfect view from the hotel as it sits amongst outstanding greenery of Great Langsale. This is one of the most spectacular valleys in the Lake District. This is a hotel that you can truly get away from it all, with green fields and drystone walls surrounding the property.

Old Dungeon is right in the middle of the amazing peaks that the Lakes is famous for. On one side, Langdale Pikes and on the other, Crinkle Crags and Bowfell. Guests have unlimited walking opportunities here as well as the perfect instagram moment. The interior is lovely too. A Victorian vibe with flock carpets and arm chairs wherever you look.

Howtown Hotel in Ullswater

Howtown Hotel is a special hotel. Set near to the shores of Ullswater, this old fashioned property offers so much to visitors inside and out.

It’s another place to get away from it all for a couple of days in the true meaning of the word. No Wi-Fi, limited signal (if any) meaning guests are cut off from the world for a true microadventure.

The rooms are spacious and fresh looking out onto the outstanding views of Hallin Fell. It’s a walker’s paradise for those wanting peace and quiet. Last minute short breaks at Howtown Hotel are a different type of Lake District experience.

Wasdale Head Inn – Wasdale

Wasdale Head is an Inn all on its own. Last minute staycations in the Lake District don’t get much more secluded than this. It’s a half hour drive to the nearest village.

Walkers are also in for a treat here as Wasdale Head Inn is overlooked by Scafell Pike and Scafell. It’s situated on Wasdale’s only road with a small parish Church and farmhouses in walking distance. The insides are welcoming and warm with cracking fires and a delightful snug bar.

Langstrath Country Inn, Borrowdale

Set within a hamlet of former minning cottages, Langstrath Country Inn in Borrowdale takes visitors back to a time gone by. This is a walkers and outdoor gem as its near to a lesser known route to Scafell Pike so it’s less busy. That’s always a win, right?!

Staycations in the Lake District are that much better when it’s quieter.  Langstrath Valley is right on your doorstep too when staying at this Country Inn. You have everything you would want at an Inn; a welcoming homely bar, a bistro serving hearty and delicious food and a resident’s lounge where you can unwind with a drink after dinner.

Last minute hotels offering this type of experience is the reason why we enjoy short breaks in the UK.

The Mortal Man in Troutbeck

For those looking to stay near the wonders of Lake Windermere then The Mortal Man hotel is the place to go. Situated high in the hills above the lake, with beautiful scenery all round.

It has an amazing beer garden that’s perfect for those summer days. Its cosy rooms and other furnishings make it a real welcoming place to come and rest your head.

Of course, there are an array of walks to explore nearby. The route that runs over Wansfell Pike and eventually meeting the shorelines of Windermere is a must.

The Eltermere Inn – Elterwater

Another hidden gem is the Eltermere Inn. Near to Ambleside and Langdale and next to the village green of Elterwater, it’s a great spot. Visitors are in for a treat here with the perfect photo opportunity as the Inn is surrounded by well-kept gardens.

This Georgian Inn dates back to the 18th century, with its high ceilings and bay windows. Each room is unique with its own style and allurement. The best rooms look out across Lake Windermere, making it a great place to come for a late romantic getaway.
